Hopefully this will be enough to get you started. When you get a planter be sure and get an Operator's Manual, and be sure you get it for the right serial number because in the sizes you list there are at least three different versions. I like to ask my seed suppliers for the largest round kernels I can get with large flats or medium rounds being my next choices. When you order seed, while the planter will plant about anything you put in it (plateless style) they seem to like large seed better and will do a better job. ![]() They respond well to favorable treatment so don't be afraid to spend a little money on it each year to keep it in good shape. I have used a 7000 planter for many years and it still does a very good job of planting. Your local fertilizer dealers can tell you what works the best in a planter system. ![]() Liquid fertilizer can simply be pumped from tank to tank, but you are somewhat limited in the analysis you can use because if you put in too much of certain kinds of fertilizer your mix gets too thick and will not pump. You can get more of a custom analysis with dry fertilizer but you have to be set up to handle it. Liquid fertilizer is easier to use than dry but either fertilizer will work fine. If not, you will have to get a template and drill these, which is not hard but is not fun, either. You will see a flat plate in the front of the opener and if there are four holes in this plate you are ok. If you are planning on no-tilling be sure that your planter has the coulters up front on the unit or at least has the mounting bolt holes for them as the very earliest planters were not drilled for them. In the sizes you are looking at there are not a lot of drastic differences from first to last and any will do a good job for you if it is in good shape. ![]() Most of these planters are inexpensive as the newest one is over 20 years old by now while the oldest is 33 (1974). Also, many of the parts will interchange with Kinze so if you have a dealer close by they will often work as well. Practically any John Deere dealer will have parts for these planters and there is a sizeable aftermarket supply of the common parts as well. Also, most chemical dealers will be spaced for 30" rows as well so this will make it easier for you to get your spraying done in a timely manner. The 30" rows will likely be more common anymore but in few localities they still use 38" rows. If you will have someone else do your harvesting for you then you need to ask around in your immediate area and see what row configuration is most commonly used so your rows will match the equipment available. You should have no problem pulling any of the planters you listed. For the first year or two the plate option was ordered by some folks but after that were not as common, although it was available clear until the end of production. First, all 7000 planters are "Ma圎merge" planters. Michael, you have asked a lot of good questions and I will try to answer a few of them. 7000 max-emerge? posted by MichaelNEIowa on Februat 17:24:09: ![]()
